Week 6 DFI dealing with data

Session #6 Dfi. Dealing with data, and much more. Today was a very busy session and there were times when I thought that I might not have enough take-home knowledge. For me it is important that I take something home from these sessions,' this is part of the empowerment that I need if these sessions are to have professional gain for me.
Dorothy SHARED the journey for some of the students in her area which reminded me that it is not just about empowering students; this journey is also about empowering fellow teachers.
That principals in this region have allowed teachers to attend these sessions during the week is commendable, and shows a realisation that 'digital' is real in the present educational environment. However, as attendees, our commitment goes beyond attendance and participation in these sessions for the 9-week duration. As I have previously shared, I have been holding wine and chocolate sessions at my school. At these sessions I have been able to share some of what I have learnt from these Dfi sessions. The teachers who are coming along to these sessions are happy to learn, eat the chocolate and maybe enjoy a glass liquid. Last week I had a blank when I was sharing how to hyperlink and couldn't remember the next step - it was no bother, together we worked it out and carried on. I wonder how other participants are sharing their learning and building knowledge together with the teachers in their respective schools.
Today's google form session was very useful to me as I had not yet gathered student voice from the students who were in my Year 9 & 10 Textiles class. I built a simple exit form and then went into hapara and mailed it to each person to complete. Thank goodness for hapara, pre hapara I would have used my gmail and entered the students one at a time!
This exit form information will provide evidence for my appraisal and it is also something that will be easy and useful to share at one of the chocolate sessions.
Today's session included a section on mygoogle maps which showed great potential BUT because I was working on my form at the wrong time I didn't enter my details into the shared doc and when I went back to do it one our esteemed fellow participants had deleted it. This is not really an issue because as Dave reminded us today, there are slides on how to do all the things covered in the Dfi sessions.

Once again Dorothy talked about the devices not being just a tool.
The more I learn and the more I create from learning the  more revolutionary I find this digital movement. It is a shame that there are some teachers who are loath to take up the challenge and get on board with education for the present!

The last comment I am going to make in this blog is about the dealing with data segment using google spreadsheets. Once I mastered some of the very basic techniques I was able to apply and again extend my knowledge in the use of data on spreadsheets. This will be extremely useful the next time I need to provide feedback to our school Board of Trustees. The example I have included shows the number of times a student blogged in English and Mathematics from January until now - mid May. I altered the numbers to achieve this chart and to show the value in breaking down data for reporting. I also mastered embedding - which I hadn't quite achieved at an earlier session when we had to embed google hang out recordings into our blogs.

The rest of this week and weekend for me, will be taken up with our subject association's (HETTANZ) PLD/AMG weekend. Zoe from OMGTech! is presenting and I am also presenting a short session on learning sites, hapara and helping participants to start building a learning site!
Thank you for your positive, thoughtful and constructive comments.

  1. Hi Adrienne,

I really enjoyed reading your reflection from Week 6, you have brought up some very similar points to what I have been thinking. As the staff BOT rep I have to present data often and at times this can take me so long to collate and present but the tips and tricks we go from this session will make it so much easier for me.

Thank you for sharing your ideas and thoughts.

    Regards,

    Amanda

  2. It is fantastic to read how you plan to share what you have been learning on the DFI to (hopefully) make your busy life a little less hectic. Using the knowledge you have to present data on spreadsheets, should be very visible for Board members and it will also show them just what you have been learning from this amazing PD opportunity.
