Sharing with wider school community

Image
This is the last week of the school term and as always it is busy. However, along with the other schools in our Hokitika Hub, we managed to hold a toolkit evening for parents. Despite extensive marketing, we did not have a great turn out, but those parents who did attend were happy with what was shared. There were sessions on Learning Sites, Explain Everything, Blogging and Hapara. We used a combination of google slides, informal conversation and also logged in as a student for parents to view google drive through the eyes of their child. The evening was positive and it showcased that this digital journey is moving at speed. But, despite all the talk of devices, drives, learning, creating, sharing and clouds; parents were reminded that there is still an opportunity for students to open up their devices and share the work that was their day. Parents in the hapara session Thank you for your positive, thoughtful and constructive comments.

#day 3 @ DFi

DFi#3. Tomorrow is day three of digital fluency and I am getting my blog ready ahead of time! Today in our staffroom we had an interesting discussion on blogging - actually a discussion that I thought we had already had in 2018! If there is one thing some of our teachers are in awe of it is blogging. Common concerns are "it's public" "do the parents realise their children are blogging" and so the comments continue. It is great to have these discussions but at some point, we need to understand that blogging is a key element in our Learn Create Share pedagogy. Enough - now it is time to reflect on day #3 and think about what I can do over the 7 remaining days of this term. Today does not seem to have been as overwhelming as last week. To be fair I think that this is in part the beautiful weather and having a face to face presenter. My first take homes for today are the blog feedbacks from Dorothy. She provided me with constructive feedback on some of the thin...
DFi # 2 Wednesday 27 March 2019 It's the pencil, not the book"! said last weeks guest presenter. A good comment I thought. This week's presenter then said, "it's not just a tool". Devices need to be seen as a  "platform for learning". I think that it is these things that educators and parents alike, need to understand before they can begin to see the value of devices for learning. These comments also provide a basis for a really interesting and captivating Masters or PhD thesis or a teacher inquiry! Today's presenter Gerhard reminded us of our guiding document, the New Zealand curriculum - he used extracts from the  curriculum showing that this digital journey aligns with the intent of the NZC. In doing this he also highlighted that the NZC 2007 was designed for future education both in Aotearoa New Zealand (and worldwide). From today I am going to add labels to my emails to make it easier to find emails and also to find and respond to unr...
